Thank you again for taking the time to come to Back-to-School night to meet with me and learn about second grade!

Our reading groups are in full swing. The children are enjoying their 35 minutes of daily, guided reading instruction.

In Math, the children practiced finding four missing numbers in a section of the number grid and had to explain how they figured out two of the numbers. They also learned about what equivalent names are for numbers and got to explore skip counting using a calculator. For fun, I even taught them how to write “hello” (upside-down) using the numbers on a calculator. Do you remember how to do that?

In Writing Workshop, we worked on fixing sentences and writing the plural form of some singular words, like goose/geese and kiss/kisses.

In Science, we did two experiments as part of our Interactions unit. We put alka-seltzer tablets and candy balls into water to see what would happen. We continue to talk about objects and property words.

The highlight of our week was earning 20 pom-poms for excellent whole class behavior. We will celebrate on Tuesday, September 20 by having pajama/stuffed animal day.

Finally, book orders are due Friday, 9/23 if you would like to order books. School photo day is Thursday, 9/22, rain or shine.

Have a great weekend,

Maren Holmes
