The Annual Willard Food Drive concludes today. I am grateful to all of the Willard families who made contributions to this year’s food drive. All items will be donated to Open Table. Many needy individuals and families will benefit from your generosity. I want to acknowledge the efforts of Ms. Vitello for coordinating the Food Drive, the 5th graders who worked hard to make the food drive so successful, and the 5th grade teachers for their help and cooperation throughout the food drive. The Willard Food Drive provides a major infusion of supplies to Open Table at a time of

Visitors to Willard on Monday couldn’t help but notice that Willard School is part of Red Sox Nation. A significant percentage of students and staff celebrated Opening Day by wearing Red Sox colors, shirts, and hats. Clearly all of this enthusiasm found its way to Fenway and influenced the outcome of the game as the Red Sox secured their first victory of the season. Spring signals the start of baseball season and also the season of state testing. This week, grade 3 students will participate in the English Language Arts MCAS. Grade 4 students will participate next week and 5th

Spring Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, April 4th. Because of Conferences, there is no school for students that day. Conferences offer all parents the opportunity to learn about their child’s academic progress and to view student work. After April vacation, the Willard staff begins the placement process. A letter explaining the Willard Placement Process was emailed to all parents early this week and is also attached (see attached). The letter outlines the parameters of the placement process. Any parent who feels the need to share vital information that the classroom teacher may not know, should download the Student Information Form

I have recognized the talents of Willard students for many years. Sunday’s Talent Show (Super Willard) only served to reaffirm that realization! During Sunday’s show, dozens of students displayed a broad range of amazing talents in singing, dancing, instrumental solos and duets. They performed gymnastics routines, comedy routines and skits, card tricks, and magic. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Talent Show Co-Chairs Alex Ruhmann and Colette Stanzler for directing such a fabulous show and for organizing such a large corps of capable parent volunteers. We all know that an event of this magnitude is just

Beware the Ides of March! When Shakespeare penned that phrase, he was referring to something much more sinister than a New England blizzard – yet somehow his words seem fitting today. Mother Nature has clearly determined that we have not yet seen the end of winter weather! The weather has had a bit of an impact on the process for the Principal Selection Process. Site visits were conducted for two of the finalists last week. The last site visit was scheduled for Tuesday, but the storm necessitated a postponement of that visit. The last site visit is now scheduled for

Superintendent Diana Rigby has announced the finalists for the Willard School Principal position. I offer my congratulations to each of the finalists: Liz Garden, Matt Lucey, and Brian O’Donoghue. All are currently serving as principals in other districts. For more information, please review the entry posted on the Willard webpage. Each finalist will visit the school to participate in two open forums – one for staff and the other for parents. As soon as the dates are finalized, parents will be notified. This will be a good opportunity for parents to meet the finalists. The superintendent will solicit written feedback

I am please to report that students and staff returned from February school vacation week appearing refreshed and ready to resume learning! Traditionally, the period of time between February and April vacation provides several weeks of uninterrupted learning time which allows students to gain a good deal of momentum in their academic progress. The teachers are excited about this! As previously mentioned, Willard School was selected to participate in the 2017 NAEP Assessment. NAEP, commonly referred to as The Nations’ Report Card, is a national assessment conducted annually to monitor the academic performance of students across America at various grade

Mother Nature certainly delivered a powerful punch over the past week resulting in two snow days and two delayed openings! Living in New England, we all know that the weather is always unpredictable! Initial feedback about the Valentines that students made for Emerson patients and Minuteman Arc clients has been extremely positive. I might be a bit biased, but I thought the Valentines were absolutely gorgeous! Students exchanged valentines with classmates at school on Tuesday. At dismissal, many of our younger students proudly carried home beautifully decorated Valentine Mailboxes with the cards that they received from their classmates. Once again,

Over the past few weeks, the political climate in our country has been challenging for many Americans. As a school staff, we recognize that the recent Executive Order imposing a travel ban to and from several countries has caused a great deal of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty for many families across the country, including some families at Willard. This situation is especially stressful for those who have family ties to these nations. As a faculty, we are united in our commitment to every Willard student and every Willard family. During this time of political transition and controversy, we recognize that

The Willard SOUPER Bowl campaign will end on Friday. We are hoping to exceed last years total of 842 cans. As of Wednesday, we had collected approximately 350 cans. Please help us meet our goal. The Willard SOUPER Bowl draws on the enthusiasm of the NFL Super Bowl as we invite students to bring in cans of soup, which will be donated to Open Table. In previous years, we have set up two tables. Each table was designated for one of the two Super Bowl teams. Students expressed their prediction for the game’s winner by placing their donated cans on
