The pace of the past few weeks combined with a school calendar that is chock full of events means only one thing, the end of the school year is in sight! While the weather would suggest otherwise, believe it or not, the school year is quickly drawing to a close. As you prepare to read this edition of the Willard Weekly only twelve school days remain in the school year!
End of year classroom celebrations of student work (publishing parties, magazine projects, EM4 games, poetry celebrations) have been held or will be held in the next few weeks. Students, teachers, and parents look forward to these events as wonderful opportunities to gather together to appreciate student work and celebrate the learning that has occurred over the course of the year. These events also help to bring a satisfying sense of closure to the school year for students, teachers, and parents.
This spring has been even more exciting and busy than usual with the addition of a 5th grade play. As mentioned in previous editions of the Willard Weekly, retired Thoreau teacher, Mr. Bob Lemaire, has led a drama initiative at each of the elementary schools this year. Mr. Lemaire has been working with Willard 5th graders since April. They will be performing their play, “The Swinging Piper”, this evening at 7:30 PM in the Willard auditorium. The cast includes more than twenty Willard 5th graders. In addition to the cast members, other Willard 5th graders have participated as stage technicians and program designers. I am very grateful to Mr. Lemaire for sharing his gift for directing with our students!
Thank you also to our PE Teacher, Mr. Germond for facilitating the 2017 Willard Field Days. Assisted by a number of parent volunteers, students have enjoyed participating in a variety of field day games and activities.
Weather permitting; the PTG is hosting a new version of 5th Grade Fun Day this year. Fifth grade students, their teachers, a few chaperones, and the principal will travel to the Thoreau Club for supervised swimming and outdoor games on June 5th from 12:00 – 3:00 PM. Permission slips have been sent home and must be returned to school tomorrow. The rain date for this event is Monday, June 12th. Thank you to the Committee Co-Chairs: Tina Labadini, Beth Athanasoulas, and Lynn Creamer.
The 5th Grade Celebration is scheduled for Thursday, June 15th at 10:30 AM in the Willard Auditorium. This event marks the end of the elementary school experience for our students. Grade 5 parents are invited to attend. Please mark your calendars. In keeping with Willard tradition, all students and staff will cheer our 5th graders at dismissal on June 16th when 5th graders take their last stroll out of the building at dismissal.
I hope to see all Willard families at the Willard Carnival on Sunday, June 4th, from 12:00 – 4:00 PM. Always a favorite of students, the Willard Carnival offers fun, games, and activities for children of all ages!
The response from parents to serve on the Willard SAC has been quite strong. We have 5 applicants to fill three vacancies. As a result, in keeping with state guidelines, the PTG will oversee an election. Parents will receive an electronic ballot next week.
As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
