More than 90 students participated in this year’s Science Fair – Dive into Science. I was so impressed with all of the projects as well as the enthusiasm that students demonstrated for sharing their knowledge of their projects. Thank you to Anne Kilroy and her Science Fair Committee for all of their hard work planning and facilitating a very successful and fun Science Fair.

Sunday was a busy day at Willard because the Willard Spelling Bee was also held on Sunday, immediately following the Science Fair. The Spelling Bee had been scheduled for March but was postponed due to inclement weather. Unfortunately, the change in date did not work well for all of the students who had originally committed to the Bee since May is such a busy time of year. Seven third grade teams of spellers and three fifth grade teams participated in this year’s event. I would like to recognize the Willard teachers who served as Spelling Bee judges: Lyndsay Schofield, Elise LaCroix, Janice Shear, Susan Halter, and Christen Lekorenos. Thank you to the Spelling Bee Co-Chairs Madeline Pooler and Kendra Pavlik for organizing the Bee again this year. Thank you to Janice Shear for once again serving as the staff liaison to the Spelling Bee and to Brian Crounse for serving as emcee.

Thank you to the PTG Staff Appreciation Committee for hosting a lovely luncheon for staff in hone of Teacher Appreciation Week last Friday. It was delicious and greatly appreciated! On Tuesday, we celebrated Willard School Secretaries’ Day. Students showered Mrs. Lucas and Mrs. Loiselle with beautiful drawings, crepe paper flowers, and colorful thank you cards. On Wednesday, we celebrated National School Nurse Day and we recognized Mrs. Sullivan for all she does to keep students healthy.

This week, MCAS testing focused on grade 4 and grade 5 Math. As of tomorrow all MCAS Math testing will be completed. Math make-up testing will be completed next week. MCAS Science testing for grade 5 is scheduled for May 17 – 18. The Science, Technology & Engineering MCAS test is not available as an online test. The Science MCAS is a paper and pencil test.

All parents are encouraged to mark your calendars for the following special events. The 5th Grade Arts Night will be held on Wednesday May 24th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The Art retrospective begins at 6:00 PM and the 5th Grade Concert (Chorus, Orchestra, & Band) begins at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. The Willard Carnival will be here before you know it. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, June 4th from 12:00 – 4:00.

The 5th Grade Celebration is scheduled for Thursday, June 15th at 10:30 AM in the Willard Auditorium. This event marks the end of the elementary school experience for our students. Grade 5 parents are invited to attend. Please mark your calendars.

Since current 5th grade co- teachers Mrs. Lyons and Mrs. Hehn will be assuming new positions next year, I am pleased to announce that I have hired two new teachers to staff the 5th grade co-taught classroom. Ms. Sophia Deese will join the staff as the regular education teacher in the classroom, while Kristine Chan will join the classroom as the special education teacher. Ms. Deese is currently a 5th grade teacher in Lawrence. She has 16 years of combined teaching experience as a Reading Specialist and classroom teacher. Ms. Chan is transferring to Willard from the Alcott School where she has been providing special education support to 4th and 5th graders for the past 6 years.

As we look ahead to the 2017-2018 school year, please mark your calendars for the following Back to School Night events:

  • Kindergarten – 9/6/17 – 6:45 PM – 8:30 PM
  • Grades 1 & 2 – 9/13/17 – 7:00 – 8:30 PM
  • Grades 3 – 5 – 9/27/17 – 7:00 – 8:30 PM

Each event begins with a General Session in the auditorium and concludes in their child’s classroom. Parents will transition to classrooms at 7:30 PM.

Three parent vacancies need to be filled on the Willard School Advisory Committee (SAC). Participation on SAC involves attendance at a monthly meeting from October – May. The term of service is two years. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month from 5:00 – 6:00 PM. The SAC is comprised of three teachers, four parents, a community member, and the principal. The SAC develops and monitors the implementation of the Willard School Improvement plan, reviews student achievement, and discusses topics of interest relating to the curriculum. If you have an interest in serving on SAC, please call me prior to May 19th. If more than three parents volunteer, the PTG will hold an election in keeping with stat law.

As always, thank you for all you do for Willard School.
